This is a common element in folklore mostly in the Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Indo-European tradition. The Evil Eye is a curse put upon someone, either intentionally or unintentionally. Some cultures believe that some people have the ability to bestow a curse on victims by their malevolent gaze. Alternately, the “Evil Eye” can be unintentional, simply implying that someone’s gaze was focused on their “victim” too long. The term “to covet” in the Tenth Commandment also refers to casting an evil eye along with simple desire or envy.

To ward off evil eyes, talismans evolved that were protective, they were able to turn back harm. There are many of these. Middle Eastern tradition makes use of discs, with concentric blue and white circles that turn back harm. The Italians believe phallic symbols are talismans, thus evolved the cornicello or cornetto.

In an effort to protect and bounce back intended or unintended evil, a group of necklaces with talismans of different kinds are being presented.
